Cruise Like a Pro: What to Pack, What to Skip, and What You’ll Wish You Brought

By Chasity Lattimore – L.O.A Travel Agency

You’ve booked the cruise. You’re counting down the days. But now comes the real challenge: packing.

Cruise newbies and even seasoned travelers often make the same mistakes when it comes to packing for a cruise. Overpacking. Underpacking. Forgetting that one thing that would’ve made the trip 10x smoother.

I’m here to make sure you don’t do that.

🧳 What to Pack (Like a Pro)

Let’s start with the essentials that’ll have you walking onboard like a seasoned sailor:

✔️ Passport or birth certificate + photo ID
Don’t get left at the port, boo.

✔️ Lanyard for your Sail & Sign card
You’ll need this for EVERYTHING onboard (drinks, room access, shopping, etc.)

✔️ Cruise-approved power strip (no surge protector!)
Cabins don’t have many outlets—and your flat iron, phone, and fan will all be fighting for space.

✔️ Comfortable walking shoes + water shoes
Whether you’re exploring ruins in Cozumel or sliding down the onboard waterpark, your feet will thank you.

✔️ Magnetic hooks
Cabin walls are metal! Use these to hang hats, swimsuits, or even that over-the-door shoe organizer for toiletries.

✔️ Your favorite insulated cup
Because ship drinks + hot weather = need to stay cool (or sneak in extra lemonade 😎).

✔️ Motion sickness meds (just in case)
Better to have it and not need it…

❌ What to Skip

Let’s talk about what to leave at home:

🚫 Towels – The ship provides them
🚫 Too many shoes – You’ll live in flip-flops or sandals
🚫 Hair dryer – Your cabin already has one
🚫 Formal wear overload – One cute outfit for elegant night is fine
🚫 Weapons, irons, or candles – TSA will snatch these from your bag real quick

😩 What You’ll Wish You Had

These are the “why didn’t I think of that” items everyone always forgets:

Small first-aid kit – Band-Aids, pain reliever, Tums, Dramamine
Waterproof phone pouch – For beach days and excursions
Mini fan for your cabin – Especially if you sleep hot
Downy wrinkle release spray – Because cruise closets are small and irons aren’t allowed
Foldable laundry bag – Keep dirty clothes organized
